Roman House under the Museo
Barracco
(
Casa romana sotto il Museo
Barracco )
The structures which may be seen in the
underground parts of the building, about
4 meters down from current street level, were
discovered in 1899 when the building was being
restored.
Most
of the remains date back to the 4th century.
They
feature various phases of construction, presumably
corresponding to buildings serving different
functions.
The
most accredited hypotheses identify these
underground structures with a public building
on the Field of Mars (the stabula quattor
factonium used by the four racing teams which
competed against each other in Rome)later
the area became private and was converted into a
genteel damus.
